The new age payment systems to collect property tax are clicking with property owners in the city.

The number of citizens paying property tax via online methods has superseded those pay using offline modes. Over 55% property tax collection for the first month of the current fiscal has taken place through mobile banking, net banking and payment gateways.

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has collected around Rs234 crore in the first month of the new financial year through property tax. Out of the total amount around Rs129.7 crore has been paid via online modes, while Rs105.3 crore was received through offline methods such as cash payments at the ward offices or citizens facilitation centres (CFCs).

As per the civic officials, the online payment has been in place for the last five years and it has been getting a good response. “The civic body offers a discount on property tax bills, if paid before May 31. Many property owners are paying taxes to avail this benefit. This has helped increase the revenue,” said a senior official of the property tax department.

“More awareness has been created about the online payment system. It has helped in the increased use of the system, eventually resulting in more income,” said Vilas Kanade, head of PMC’s property tax department.

The PMC officials pointed out that collection from property owners has been better this year, as compared with the corresponding period in the last financial year. Last year, around 45% people had opted for the online payment services. This year, the payment is around Rs20 crore more than the last year.

The officials added that the introduction of mobile-based payment system is also getting a good response from citizens.

As per PMC officials, the civic administration hopes to get more revenue from the tax in the current fiscal. Nearly 1.67 lakh more properties have been added in the PMC limits. As a result, the properties in PMC’s tax ambit have crossed the mark 10 lakh. The revenue will rise by around Rs64 crore due to added properties.
