The West Bengal government has introduced a digital platform to expedite the property registration process in the State. Now, the homeowners can not only register their property online, but the verification of documents and payment of stamp duty would also be executed virtually.

The online portal has been introduced primarily in the wake of the financial challenges faced by the State government post the COVID-19 induced lockdown. Furthermore, the government has also announced a registration fee discount until May 31, 2020. People who register their properties within the specified period may avail a rebate of 20 percent of the registration fee with an upper limit of Rs 20,000.

Rajivna Sinha, Chief Secretary, West Bengal, has stated that the State government would soon start the e-registration process where people could submit the property deed online and can procure a provisional digital certificate. The certificate would be valid everywhere.

To complete the biometric identification, property owners have to visit the registration office, post the lockdown. In case the government receives ample deeds, an official from the registration directorate may also visit the location of the registrants to complete the process and deliver the deeds.
