The entire episode hits that tone perfectly, right down to the simple but effective musical theme. The Empire has just fallen, the First Order hasn’t formed yet and the galaxy is in a state of turmoil. Sparse enough to feel bigger than it is, slick without looking over-polished, and introducing a moody, mumbly antihero that is somehow already worth caring about, The Mandalorian is off to a great start. The deep wooden flute tones that kick off the main theme are haunting, mysterious, and evoke Ennio Morricone’s classic title track from The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly so well that The Mandalorian feels more like a Western than a Star Wars show. Thankfully, The Mandalorian Season 1 Episode 1 does much more than that. I found The Mandalorianto be a fun Star Wars adventure, with plenty of room to grow. He has just learned to make friends with an animal, a potentially goofy scene that worked well for me in part because of the earnest delight of the music. There’s no John Williams score, and no familiar faces from the films, but showrunner Jon Favreau (Iron Man, The Lion King) and director Dave Filoni (The Clone Wars, Rebels) nail the look, tone and texture of George Lucas’ battered sci-fi worlds. Not all of the humor works. It turns out his target is ‘Baby Yoda’ – the cutest thing in Star Wars and best meme of 2019 – which obviously melts his cold, dark bounty hunter heart, setting up the rest of the series to be some kind of action-packed sci-fi babysitter show.
